now, while the instant cbs news poll found that governor romney won by a 2-1 margin, we asked the question, why? we found it may not be based on what was said during the debate but, rather, on the nonverbal communication. [ applause and cheers ] >> reporter: the body language started strong. friendly with the two candidates standing locked in a handshake. >> how you are saying something was often times more important than what you were saying. >> reporter: but cbs 5 political analyst joe tuman says if you were to rate the candidates strictly on their nonverbal communication after that, former governor romney was the clear winner. >> he was energetic. he smiled a lot. and he seemed full of pep for the president. >> reporter: he says romney frequently looked at the president, kept his head up and appeared engaged while the president kept his eyes down cast. >> and when you combine looking down with a frown, while the other person on the other screen is smiling and looking

directly at you and also attacking you at the moment, it looks like you're not liking what you're hearing. >> reporter: there were signs of warmth from the president. >> you saw the president occasionally catch himself not smiling. he would catch it. he has a great warm smile. >> the last point i'd make before -- >> two minutes is up, sir. >> no. i think i had five seconds before you interrupted me -- was -- [ laughter ] >> reporter: but even in the final moments, some critics say that the president emerged from his podium too soon. >> when it was over, the president was first out to go and meet governor romney and governor romney took his time coming around which made it look as if he was in control and the president was eager to congratulate him on a good performance but i actually think that the president was just happy to be done with it. >> reporter: tuman's prediction we'll see a much more engaged president in the next debate on the 16th, possibly lots of smiles. if you want to talk about words, how about the ones we did not hear? romney's taxes, bain capital,

47%, we didn't hear any of that. and what could have actually helped the president is if he had talked about women's reproductive rights because polls show a huge amount of support among female voters. i'm grace lee, cbs 5. a warm furry reunion in san jose after a family's horrifying discovery their beloved dog had been stolen in a burglary. len ramirez on how meeko made it back home. >> reporter: the mother of the little girl whose dog was stolen during a burglary a couple of days ago kept telling her daughter despite how bad it looked that this could still have a happy ending that there are still good people in the world. that turned out to be very prophetic today when the dog came back home. 10-year-old marisa knew something was up when she came home from school and found a crowd in her front yard. then her hopes and prayers were answered when her sister appeared at the front door holding her beloved meeko. >> thank you. thank you to everybody!

who made this happen. >> reporter: the dog had been stolen during a burglary at the south san jose home on monday thanks to news coverage of the story yesterday, a woman who found meeko running loose in a target parking lot in loss banos returned the dog today. >> i recognized the dog from the picture that they put up. it was really -- >> reporter: what did you think you had to do? >> i had to return it. i seen her face. she was really sad. and i was like, oh.... i need to return it. it was the right thing to do. >> reporter: in a tearful plea, marisa had offered her piggy became for the dog's safe return. san jose police and firefighters and city council members upped the reward to $6,000. marisa and her family couldn't believe that something good came out of a bad family episode. were you surprised? >> yeah. i'm just happy that he's safe and he's back and our family was apart. he is going to be safe no matter what now.

>> reporter: now, the woman from los banos who returned the dog today says that she is going to put that reward money to good use. allen, her own children got attached to the dog when they found it yesterday after only a couple of days. and so she is going to use that money to go buy them a new puppy. >> len, i can't tell you how many people have asked me, what kind of breed is that little dog? i read it, they call it a yorkie shih tzu mix. >> reporter: it is a mix. it's a cute mix. it's one of those things where that dog just has a face that could you recognize. and that is exactly what happened. the woman looking at her mobile phone saw a news report called it in and you saw the happy reunion today. >> yeah. good all the way around. len, thanks. the man who will lead 400,000 bay area catholics officially took over today. salvatore cordileone was installed as archbishop of san francisco in a three-hour mass

that included ancient church ritual. cbs 5 reporter mark sayre on a day of ceremony and protest. mark. >> reporter: well, elizabeth, the installation of san francisco's new archbishop met by protestors as well as a counterprotest from those welcome him here. archbishop salvatore cordileone walked inside the front doors of st. mary's cathedral at the beginning of the installation ceremony part of the formal tradition of this service and just a few hundred feway prestors let it be known that they are sappoied by the choice of this particular archbishop formerly the bishop of oakland because of his work on california's same-sex marriage ban pr 8. the archbishop himself did not mention me-sex marriage in his welcoming address but he did address his own recent dui arrest in san diego. >> i cannot, though, adequately express my gratitude to you all for the outpouring of love, support and promises of prayers i received in the wake of the

regrettable mistake in judgment i made with regard to my driving and for which i apologize. >> he is about the most antigay catholic person they could find to do this. this is done with a reason to tell gay families they will never be treated equally in this country. >> reporter: now, this three- hour ceremony was attended by the vatican's ambassador to the united states as well as two cardinals. so what does this mean for the future of relationships between the catholic archdiocese in san francisco and others? we'll have that at 6:00. thank you. today an embattled oakland police department stepped before the public and responded to a long list of complaints. from an uptick in crime to a growing public outcry over police shootings, the department has been battered with criticism in recent weeks. that includes the federal monitor's report that raised questions about the department's own internal investigations. >> it's not been easy. it's been challenging but there's no one here that's ducking from the responsibility.

we all want the same thing. the judge wants the same thing. i want the same thing. i want our offices to practice constitutional policing. >> chief jordan added the department has not had enough time to review the entire report. two homicides in four hours put san jose's murder rate at 36 for the year. the first shooting happened about 8:30 last night on south 2nd street in east san fernando street. then shortly after midnight a man was shot and killed outside his friend's birthday party at a home on doburn avenue. police think that one is gang relate. they say this is part of the worst spike of violence in years. many blame resent cuts to the police department. >> the fact that we don't have violent crimes enforcement team that we know about anymore is an indication to some gang members they can commit new acts of violence freely. >> the police are still searching for suspects in both shootings. experts blame a complicated

ra tonight investigators are warning hundreds if not thousands of patients could be at risk for a rare meningitis infection. the culprit, a tainted steroid drug often used to alleviate lower back pain. dr. kim mulvihill reports, vials of the medication were shipped here to california. reporter: sue manor is waiting to see if she gets meningitis. >> i just sort of thought okay we're going to research. and, of course, the more i researched it, the more worried i get. >> reporter: manor is one of 400 patients who got a call from a tennessee clinic saying they may have been exposed it a rare form of fungal meningitis

which is not contagious. 35 cases in six states, five died all sick after getting epidural steroid injections most for low back pain. >> none of us have seen anything like this where a medication injected into the cerebrospinal fluid has caused infection. so we're in new territory here. >> reporter: the drug came from the new england compounding center in massachusetts. federal investigators found fungal contaminants in unopened vials at the facility. today the fda announced that the pharmacy shipped some of the suspect medication to 23 states including california. if you had an epidural steroid injection since july, this is what you need to know. it's an inflammation of the lining of the brain and spinal cord. symptoms are severe, worsening headaches, nausea, dizziness, fever. in some cases symptoms might mimic a stroke with slurred speech and difficulty with walking, showing up within one

to four weeks. >> perhaps some patients and certainly some doctors wouldn't think of meningitis right away if the patient presented primarily with those kinds of symptoms. >> reporter: to date, there have been no reports of illness in california. we don't know at this point where the drug was shipped in california but health experts expect to see more cases. if you have any symptoms or pain, tenderness or swelling at the injection site call your doctor to see if were you given a shot from a suspect vial. dr. kim mulvihill, cbs 5. >> you see this? get used to it this weekend the busy, busy couple of days in san francisco. >> and stretching your paycheck. don't get sucked into the health kick at the grocery store. the five health claims you shouldn't buy into. ,,

baseball, america's cup, street fairs, more than that. there could be more than a million people coming into the city. cbs 5's mike sugerman with the warning chp wants you to take heed of. mike. reporter: i'm south of market and you see the traffic. someone told me it took them 45 minutes to go a mile. that might be good practice for this weekend. the bay area is a popular place to come on weekends but it may never be as popular as it is this weekend when upwards of a million people are expected for a visit. there is a lot going on. so i have come up to twin peaks which is the highest part of the city to give you a sort of aerial view of what's going on this weekend. we have two giants games at&t park saturday and sunday. fleet week up in the air near the embarcadero. the america's cup in the bay. we got two big cruise ships coming in at the cruise terminal. we have a fair -- the castro street fair in the castro district. and hardly strictly bluegrass which is a big concert in

golden gate park. other side of the bay is a cal game on saturday. look a little further south, sunday, football game, candlestick house, full house for the 49ers. we have a madonna concert in san jose on sunday. there's a half a marathon they are going to be running in san jose, as well. >> if you can, try to arrange for public transportation, try to find a carpool, drive with people, if you are planning to come to events here in the city. >> reporter: law enforcement will be out in force. if you can't take bart, muni, caltrain or anything else, you don't drive, here's a simple tip. fill your gas tank! sounds like a big doh, but you would be surprised. >> traffic slows down, people start to idle. they are on the road for a little longer than they anticipated. just make sure you have a full tank of gas before you get started. >> reporter: you run out of gas on the road, you're stuck. tow trucks are going to get stuck in traffic, too. but just in case, there will be extra tow trucks out there this

weekend. but fill your tank. in san francisco, mike sugerman, cbs 5. all that traffic could put bart on track to break some records. ken bastida is live with mobile5 to show us how the transit agency is gearing up for the weekend. ken. reporter: hi, liz. we're up here on the platform of the daly city bart station. 419,000 people rode bart yesterday. that is a record. you had the oracle people in town, the as game over in oakland. but they expect to blow that up record this weekend with all the people in town that mike has been talking about. you know all the events. lionel armstrong says i ride bart every day i don't care i'm going to ride it on the weekend, too. >> a lot of activities going on. we got the giants. as. we got the blue angels. we got the america's cup as well. >> reporter: that's right. you are taking bart. are you going to be chancing going into the city this weekend? >> yup, more than likely.

many shoppers may a premium for foods advertised as healthy and good. are they worth it? cbs 5 consumerwatch reporter julie watts with five health claims you shouldn't buy into. reporter: scan the aisles and it seems suddenly everything at the supermarket is on a health kick. >> the nutritional value. >> to stay healthy. >> there is a big emphasis on health. >> reporter: this registered dietician says not all the claims nor highly touted ingredients are really worth paying extra for. >> it's really all about marketing and just getting the consumer to buy their products. >> reporter: number one on the list of the top five offenders, olive oil. it's front and center on many cracker boxes these days. the only problem -- >> there is not a whole lot of olive oil in there. reporter:

ingredients. it's the second-to-last ingredient in these crackers. and dead last in these. claim number 2, made wit real fruit. it's all over the market. >> the real fruit is lemon peel. >> reporter: turns out that's something that's all too common. >> you will see what's in it is apple concentrate or, you know, flavoring or something that contains a remnant of a fruit. >> reporter: "all natural" is only regulated when it comes to meat and poultry. it doesn't many anything in everything else. fourth on the list the phrase added vitamins and nutrients. sounds like a good idea but many of those additions don't help your body or your wallet. take this vitamin water. >> the average person is getting more than enough of these in other foods they are eating every day. >> reporter: and rounding out the top five list, made with whole grains. really that just means there's some whole grain somewhere in the product. if you really want whole grains, you want to make sure
